Die funktionelle Bildgebung mittels Kernspintomographie, Magnetenzephalographie und EEG hat in den letzten Jahren neue Erkenntnisse über die neuroanatomische Organisation dieser Gedächtnisfunktionen geliefert, die unmittelbare Relevanz für die Entwicklung präventiver und therapeutischer Strategien bei dementiellen Erkrankungen haben. Eine wichtige Rolle spielen hier Neurotransmitter wie Dopamin, Noradrenalin, Serotonin und Acetylcholin. Diese sind nicht nur wichtig für die Regulation höherer Hirnfunktionen, sie sind auch von neurodegenerativen Prozessen besonders stark betroffen. Am IKND wird mit Hilfe innovativer Verfahren der funktionellen und strukturellen Bildgebung sowie der Analyse genetischer Variationen untersucht wie diese Neurotransmitter Hirnfunktionen regulieren und welche Auswirkungen von ihren Störungen ausgehen. Forschungsergebnisse des IKND deuten z.B. daraufhin, dass der Botenstoff Dopamin das Langzeitgedächtnis für neue Ereignisse verbessert und motivational aktivierende Effekte auf Mobilität hat.  Dopamin verbindet dabei die motivationalen Aspekte von Belohnungserwartung mit Neuheit und regt so exploratives Verhalten von neuen Umgebungen an, aus heutiger Sicht ein wichtiger Antriebsmechanismus für Hirnplastizität im Alter. Funktionell und strukturell bildgebende Studien zeigen, dass auch bei gesunden älteren Menschen degenerative Prozesse von Dopamin produzierenden Hirnregionen mit Gedächtnisproblemen in Verbindung stehen. Eine altersbedingte Degeneration dieser Regionen hat daher negative Auswirkungen auf das Langzeitgedächtnis und auf die Motivation Neues zu erkunden. Daraus ergeben sich Konsequenzen für die Prävention von Gedächtnisverlusten im Alter.

Das Institut für Kognitive Neurologie und Demenzforschung (IKND) wurde 2008 als neue Struktureinheit an der Medizinischen Fakultät in Magdeburg gegründet. Am IKND werden die Mechanismen höherer kognitiver Hirnfunktionen, wie z.B. Gedächtnis, Motivation, zielgerichtetes Handeln, Entscheidungsfindung und Verhaltenskontrolle erforscht. Ein besonderer Schwerpunkt liegt in der Erforschung der Störungen dieser Hirnfunktionen im Alter und bei neurodegenerativen Erkrankungen wie dementiellen Syndromen und der Parkinson¿schen Erkrankung.Forschungsergebnisse des IKND deuten z.B. daraufhin, dass der Botenstoff Dopamin das Langzeitgedächtnis für neue Ereignisse verbessert und motivational aktivierende Effekte auf Mobilität hat.
