Frau Prof. Brunner-Weinzierl forscht über molekulare Mechanismen der adaptiven Immunantwort. Seit ihren Forschungsarbeiten mit James P. Allison (Nobelpreisträger 2018) in Berkeley, beschäftigt sie sich mit "Immuncheckpoint" Therapien bei der Tumorabstoßung. Weiterhin interessiert sie sich dafür, wie Immunpathologien bereits in der frühen Kindheit angelegt werden (z.B. Allergien) und wie das Immunsytsems von Kleinkindern Infekte abwehrt. Sie ist Leiterin der Forschung der Kinderklinik, deren Klinischer Immundiagnostik und Vorsitzende der Forschungskommission der OVGU. Seit 2016 ist sie gewählte Prorektorin für Forschung, Technologie und Chancengleichheit.
