Reading: "The future is not binary" by Lydia Meyer

10.04.2024 -

There are only two genders? No way! People are more than either or. Nevertheless, our language, our media and our everyday lives are characterized by the assumption that there are only two genders that are binary. Advertising, toys, clothing and stories, models of experience and relationships, even algorithms and the sciences - our entire culture is permeated by this. In everyday life, we encounter the binary gender order everywhere: in sport, when buying clothes, in public toilets and at the citizens' office, when dating and on social media. But the two-gender system is not only incomplete, it also excludes. For many people, it doesn't fit. It feels wrong. Awareness of this and media attention are increasing. But with increasing visibility, anti-trans and anti-queer voices are also becoming louder and are trying with all their might to defend the binary gender system. Yet there is emancipatory potential for all people in overcoming the rigid binary system.
