Objectives

The research-oriented degree programme qualifies graduates for independent work as psychologists in research and application. The degree programme imparts in-depth scientific and methodological knowledge (specialised scientific knowledge in the chosen focus area; knowledge of relevant research methods) as well as in-depth practical professional and research qualifications (experience in the independent use of research methods within the framework of psychological research and application projects). The broad education in the Master's programme, which concludes with the general "Master of Science" degree, which is not specified in terms of content, prepares students for managerial, independent work in a wide range of professional fields as well as for research-oriented careers in universities and research institutions.

Career Perspectives

Graduates acquire subject-specific qualifications for professional fields, e.g. in (rehabilitation) clinics, in pharmaceutical research or in family and educational counselling centres, in youth welfare offices and in social welfare or in labour, organisational and environmental counselling, in industrial companies, public authorities or institutions of further education, according to the specialisations chosen in the Master's programme. The academic training leading to the M.Sc. degree in psychology provides a sufficient prerequisite for further postgraduate training within and outside psychology (e.g. doctorate, psychotherapy training).

Competencies and Interests Required

Existing knowledge from the completed Bachelor's degree and interest in deepening this knowledge under the special aspects of one of the selectable specialisations are required.

More information

The study structure provides for eight compulsory modules. The study programme lasts two years or four semesters and comprises 120 CP, of which 10 CP are allocated to an eight-week work-oriented internship and 30 CP to the 6-month Master's thesis. The programme consists of a general part (core curriculum), a basic or application module (12 CP) and the following three alternatively selectable specialisations (24 CP each):

  •     Cognitive neuroscience
  •     Clinical neuroscience
  •     Environmental psychology/human-technology interaction

In addition to teaching subject-specific competences, the degree programme is also of particular importance for general professionalisation (e.g. teaching key qualifications including so-called "soft skills").

Foreign applicants who have obtained their degree according to Paragraph 1 in a non-German-speaking degree programme must prove their German language skills by passing the "German Language Test for the Admission of Foreign Applicants to Higher Education" Level 3 or the TestDAF Level 5 prior to enrolment.
