Registration at the Library
Walking through the campus sooner or later you will come across the library building. Right next to Mensa and in front of the computer center the library will become a second home for some of the students especially during the examination time. Learning for exams, writing a paper or a thesis, group work or preparing for the seminars and lectures – the libraries on the main campus and the campus of the Faculty of Medicine are the perfect places for these assignments. But before the students are faced with the vast collection of books they have to deal with registration and first orientation in the library.
You can also find tips on how to get started on the University Library's website.
Registration at the Library
The students visit the library already during the orientation weeks on the campus. It is necessary to register before you can borrow books or use the online services at the library. Only after the students are registered as users they can enjoy the diversity of literature of the OVGU library. The application forms are available online or at the issue desk. It is necessary to bring your student ID card or personal identity card when handing in the registration. International students will need to provide the student ID card (UniCard), passport and a valid proof of residence (rental contract / registration confirmation). A user name will be printed on the student ID card upon the registration. With this user name you can login to your library online account. There you can change your personal data as well as track the book lending status. The user name is on the back side of the UniCard near the barcode. By default the password is consisted of the first three letters of the family name. You have to change the password as soon as possible after you get the access.
Orientation in the Library
At the beginning of the semester a number of library guided tours are organized. Often faculties and student representative in the faculties organize library tours during the orientation weeks. We strongly recommend to participate in these tours, especially to first-semester students. The book search is taking place through the online portal ubfind.ovgu.de. In the online portal the students can search literature by title, author, publisher, etc. and see the lending status of a book. You can borrow a book from the open stacks (Freihandbereich) at the issue desk on the ground floor of the library or at using the self-check counter. The lending period is always 28 running days. As long as no reservation has been placed by another student for the book, the lending can be extended up to 5 times. It is possible to extend the book online via the online user account or at the issue desk. The users receive an email notification of the expiry of lending period three days prior to due date. The teaching staff often provides literature for a seminar during one semester that is counted as a basic literature. The so called semester reserved collections are on the first floor of the university library of the main campus.
The university library on the main campus has more than 600 working place, 57 single study rooms (carrels) and three group rooms. The study rooms are divided to monthly or daily carrels. The keys for the daily carrels can be picked up at 8 o’clock in the morning at the info desks of 1st and 2nd floor. The monthly carrels have to be booked beforehand. Monthly carrels are designed exceptionally for carrying out a research. The students can use the W-LAN network of the university to work in the library.
