Language Requirements: English

OVGU Framework of Reference for Language skills from Winter Semester 2026/27 (Language levels or certificates not listed in the document can still be regulated independently by the faculties.)

Many international Bachelor's and Master's degree programmes at Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg are offered in English. For admission to these programmes, applicants need to provide evidence of an adequate knowledge of English, usually B2 or C1 level of the European Framework of Reference.

The most commonly accepted tests are:

• TOEFL-Test: B2 (85 iBT) oder C1 (95 iBT) (wir akzeptieren auch den TOEFL iBT® Home Edition)                                    Bitte berücksichtigen Sie, dass TOEFL zum 21.01.2026 eine neue Skala eingeführt hat;
• IELTS: B2 (6.5) oder C1 (7.0) (wir akzeptieren auch den IELTS Indicator und IELTS Online);
• Cambridge English: Certificate in English + Grade A (FCE) oder Certificate of Advanced English + Grade B or C (CAE);
• CAE (Certificate of Advanced English);
• Pearson PTE Academic: B2 (70) oder C1 (76);
• telc: B2 oder C1;
• TOEIC (Test of English for International Communication):  Listening and Reading Test (865 - 945), Speaking Test (170 - 180), Writing Test (160 - 180) (All three tests must be provided);
• UNIcert: II oder III;
• Abitur Degree Degree: holders of the German Abitur (general and subject-related) are exempt from presenting a language certificate (English) for any level up to and including C1.

Please check the specific language requirements for the brief description of your studies, which language certificates are accepted. 

Some applicants are exempt from showing an additional proof of their English proficiency. This is the case for the following:

Secondary school leaving certificates from:

• Australia;
• Canada (all provinces except Quebec and New Brunswick);
• USA (High School Diploma);

and:

• British and international GCE A-Level certificates;
• Irish Leaving Certificate;
• New Zealand National Certificate of Educational Achievement;
• Scottish Qualifications Certificate;
• International Baccalaureate (IB Diploma): Language A or Language B HL;
• European Baccalaureate: Language L1 or L2.

If the degree programme was completed in the respective country, university degrees from

• Australia;
• Great Britain;
• Ireland;
• Canada (except degrees from the provinces of Quebec and New Brunswick);
• New Zealand;
• USA.

Completed a qualification equivalent to a German degree in: 

• Antigua and Barbuda, the Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, the British Overseas Territories, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Jamaica, Malta, St Kitts and Nevis, St Lucia, St Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago.

All other applicants must submit official language certificates with their application.
