By the start of the 4th semester students must have chosen one of these specialisations through which they will be able to focus on a future professional field.
The course conveys the concepts, methods and possible applications of modern mathematics as well as in-depth knowledge in essential mathematical sub-disciplines. Skills such as structured logical thinking, the ability to abstract, and creativity are promoted, and the effective use of computers and mathematical software is introduced. Students have the opportunity to supplement these skills with an applied subject such as computer science, physics or economics and management, and set their own individual priorities within their course of studies through the choice of a specialisation. The combination of these skills and knowledge makes it possible for graduates to work on tasks from widely varying fields using mathematical models.
The following choice of applied subjects is available:
- Electrical Engineering
- Computer Science
- Economics and Management
Although there is no specific career profile, the fundamental importance of mathematics for education, industry and research generates a high demand for skilled professionals with a high level of mathematical training who are able to express scientific, technical and economic phenomena in mathematical terms. This versatility is an advantage and opens up many different opportunities and prospects. The following are examples of professional fields: Research and development in the technical and industrial sectors, banking and insurance, administration and consulting, software development, medicine and pharmaceuticals. Furthermore, students may also graduate to a Master’s degree course in mathematics or a related field.
Competencies and Interests Required
First and foremost, candidates for this course must be interested in and enjoy mathematics, as well as taking pleasure in logical and abstract thought.
