Objectives

Biosystems Technology deals with the investigation and biotechnological / medical use of biological systems. Predominantly system and engineering-related tools such as mathematical modelling are used alongside modern molecular biology methods to, for example, better understand complex phenomena such as the regulation of metabolic pathways or the functionality of signal transmissions in cells. The knowledge obtained opens up new possibilities in the many areas of modern medicine and biotechnological production. Increasing amounts of research and development activity in the strongly interdisciplinary area of systems biology are being accompanied by an increasing need for highly qualified personnel with knowledge and experience in the areas of biology, systems science and engineering who are able to link these effectively.

Career Perspectives

Graduates may find employment in fundamental research in the areas of engineering, biology / neurosciences and medicine, as well as in applied research in pharmaceutical, medical technology and biotechnology industry companies. Roles with the technical authorities are also a possibility.

Competencies and Interests Required

Candidates should have solid secondary school-level knowledge in the natural sciences, and in particular mathematics and biology, plus a basic technical understanding and interest in solving biological and technical/scientific problems.

More information

The course in Biosystems Technology is an interdisciplinary course offered by the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology, the Faculty of Process and Systems Engineering, the Faculty of Medicine and the Faculty of Natural Sciences. It imparts knowledge and skills in fundamental and applied subjects in the fields of engineering, medicine and natural sciences. These are complemented by lectures in additional subjects, particularly mathematics and computer science. Theoretical knowledge is consolidated / transferred into practice by means of laboratory practicals throughout the course. Since the summer semester of 2011, Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg has offered a Master's course following on from the Bachelor's degree in Biosystems Technology. In accordance with the range of mandatory electives, various profiles are possible, including the bioprocess-related, medical and system biology theoretical profiles.
