Natural Sciences

Brief profile

The natural sciences constitute an essential theoretical basis for engineering developments, medical progress and environmental protection. Due to the interdisciplinary way in which teaching is organised, the key areas of research in the Faculty dovetail closely with the engineering, computer science, medical and neuroscientific research projects of other faculties. Some of the research projects undertaken in the Faculty deal with cognitive neuroscience, cultural and socialisation research, research under space and zero-gravity conditions, and semiconductor nanostructures for microelectronics and optoelectronics. In addition to the strongly interdisciplinary programmes with natural science, engineering and neuroscience components, the Faculty also offers programmes with social science elements.

Theoretical Physics – e.g. Optical micro-resonators and quantum chaos, magnetic molecules and nanomagnetism, electrodeposition,  crystal growth through step movement

Experimental Physics – e.g. solid state physics, semiconductor epitaxy, materials physics, non-linear phenomena, biomedical magnetic resonance, structure formation and self-organisation

Psychology II
    • General psychology - neuronal principles of attention, neuronal principles of learning, methods of fMRI analysis
    • Biological psychology - multi-sensory integration, attention, hunger and appetitive behaviour
    • Neuropsychology - performance monitoring and resulting adaptive cognitive control, decision-making processes
    • Psychoinformatics - development of methods for multivariate analyses of brain activation patterns, interaction of neuronal and cognitive processes in complex simulation with quasi-natural stimuli
    • Clinical development psychology - interaction of different forms of learning and memory processes over the lifespan, age-specific changes
