by plane

The nearest international airports are Frankfurt/Main, Berlin and Hamburg. From there, as well as from all other German airports, you can easily reach Magdeburg by train or bus.

by train

You can reach Magdeburg Central Station by train (Deutsche Bahn) using either an ICE (Inter City Express), an IC (Inter City) or a regional train. Tickets can be bought online before the journey. Purchased tickets must either be printed out or downloaded as mobile tickets into the app of Deutsche Bahn. The purchase of a Flexpreis-ticket is worth considering. Flexpreis-tickets include an unrestricted choice of trains on the day of travel. They can be used on the valid day for all trains in the valid categories on the booked route. by bus

Another good and cheap way to reach Magdeburg is to use a long distance bus provided by Flixbus. A flixbus will take you to the Central Bus Station (ZOB), which is located directly next to the main train station. Tickets can also be bought online at Flixbus before the journey. Purchased tickets must either be printed out or downloaded as mobile tickets into the app of Flixbus. Information on timetables and prices can be found here.

by car pool

In Germany there is also the possibility of car pooling. This means that one person travels by car and still has free seats for other persons. You can find carpooling offers here.

from Frankfurt/ Main Airport

Magdeburg can be reached from the airport in Frankfurt/Main by train in approx. 5h 40min. There is no direct connection. Travellers have to change trains in Hanover Central Station or Halle/Saale Central Station. There are two direct connections per day operated by Flixbus. The travel time of the two journeys varies between 6h and 12h.

from Berlin/Schönefeld Airport (SFX)

Magdeburg can be reached from the airport Berlin Schönefeld (SFX) by train operated by Deutsche Bahn in approx. 2h 40min. There is no direct connection. Travellers have to change trains at Berlin Ostbahnhof.

from Berlin/Tegel Airport (TXL)

Magdeburg can be reached by train from the aiport Berlin Tegel (TXL) in approx. 2 hours 20 minutes. There is no direct connection. Travellers first have to take the bus 109 to Berlin Charlottenburg station and then take the train to Magdeburg from there.

from Hamburg Airport (HAM)

Magdeburg can be reached from Hamburg Airport (HAM) by train operated by Deutsche Bahn in approx. 3h 30min. There is no direct connection. Travellers have to change trains twice. From the airport you have to take the S-Bahn to Hamburg Central Station. From there you can take the train to Hanover. In Hanover you change to the train to Magdeburg. There are no direct connections via Flixbus. The journey to Magdeburg takes place with a change in Hanover. The journey time varies between approx. 6h 45min and 7h 55min.

 

From Magdeburg Central Station to Otto von Guericke University

From the bus or train station it takes about 25 minutes on foot or 15 minutes by tram to the main campus. To get to the university, take the exit "Willy-Brandt-Platz" at Magdeburg Central Station.

  1. Leave the station through the exit "Willy-Brandt-Platz". 
  2. Cut through the shopping centre "City Carré".
  3. Cross the street at the traffic lights and continue to the stop "City-Carré / Hauptbahnhof".
  4. Take the tram number 10 (direction of “Barleber See / Neustadt über Zoo) to the stop “Universität”.

 

By Car to Otto-von-Guericke-University

You can also reach the university by car. It is possible to use the motorway as well as the country roads. In Germany, the use of the motorway is free of charge. The fastest route can be found with the help of Google Maps.

Coming from Frankfurt/ Main

  1. Take the A5, A7, A39 onto the A2
  2. Exit 70 "Magdeburg-Zentrum" onto the Magdeburger Ring (E49/B189) southbound, use exit "Albert-Vater-Straße" onto the B1 eastbound until you reach the Universitätsplatz (large roundabout).

Coming from Berlin

Via the A2 exit 70 "Magdeburg Zentrum" onto the Magdeburger Ring (E49/B189) southbound, use exit "Albert-Vater-Straße" onto the B1 eastbound until you reach the Universitätsplatz (large roundabout).

Coming from Hamburg

  1. Drive via A1 and A2 onto the A2
  2. Exit 70 "Magdeburg-Zentrum" onto the Magdeburger Ring (E49/B189) southbound, use exit "Albert-Vater-Straße" onto the B1 eastbound until you reach Universitätsplatz (large roundabout).

Coming from Halle/Leipzig

  1. Via the A14 exit 105 "Magdeburg Sudenburg, Zentrum" onto the Magdeburger Ring (B81/E49/B71) northbound, use exit "Albert-Vater-Straße" (Helmstedt, Dessau, Burg, Zentrum, Olvenstedt) onto the B1 in the direction of "Dessau, Burg, Zentrum" (east) to Universitätsplatz (large roundabout).
  2. Take the B1 from the west to Universitätsplatz (large roundabout). Do not drive through the tunnel.
  3. Circumnavigate 3/4 of the roundabout and turn into "Gareisstraße."
  4. At the first traffic light turn right into "Henning-von-Tresckow-Str."
  5. If you are arriving on the B1 from the east (from Dessau or Burg), cross the two bridges over the Elbe. At the second traffic light after the bridges turn right into "Pfälzer Straße."
