Registering with the Authorities

All international students who intend to study for more than two months at OVGU must register at a local administration office (residents' registration office (RRO)) within seven days of arrival.

The local administration office (Einwohnermeldeamt/Bürgerbüro) is located in the city centre. The physical address is Leiterstraße 2a and the tram stop is "Leiterstraße".

During the Welcome Week, the Citizens’ Office offers on-campus appointments for students in the Campus Service Center (Building 01). Please check the opening hours directly at the Campus Service Center.

In order to register, everybody needs a confirmation of the landlord/provider of housing ("Wohnungsgeberbestätigung"). The provider of housing is either your landlord, a person mandated by your landlord or the main tenant if you are a subtenant.

In addition, non-EU residents need to register in the foreigners’ registration office (“Ausländerbehörde”) within 3 months after their arrival.

Required documents for the registration formalities detailed above:

  • Passport/national ID
  • Registration form
  • Rental contract (“Mietvertrag”) that shows your Magdeburg address
  • Confirmation of enrolment (“Immatrikulationsbescheinigung”)
  • Proof of health insurance
  • Proof about financial ability to stay in Germany
  • Cash: 110 € for the grant of residence, 80 € for the renewal of your residence permission
  • 1 or 2 photographs in biometric format
