Objectives

This modern course sits at the point where chemistry and engineering meet. It conveys knowledge and skills relating to the development of new materials, such as nanostructures and the discovery and synthesis of new materials for the pharmaceutical industry. Students gain an insight into fundamental research, which is strongly application orientated – for example students look into the mathematical design of a reactor for the large-scale implementation of processes previously researched at molecular level. Disciplines such as bioprocess engineering or chemical reaction engineering are also part of the course. The course offers an insight into experimental work in the laboratory. Practical placements in industry enable students to gain initial experience in working with large-scale production plants.

Career Perspectives

Graduates find employment in the chemical and pharmaceutical industries, in the animal feed, food, beverage and tobacco industries, as well as in areas of the oil and coal industries. Activity in the manufacture of paper, textiles and construction materials, plus metallurgy, medical technology, biotechnology, combustion technology, power plant technology, refrigeration engineering and environmental engineering is also possible. In addition, graduates of the Bachelor’s degree course are also qualified to continue onto further scientific degree courses (Masters).

Competencies and Interests Required

Basic knowledge of the natural sciences, especially chemistry, plus a basic technical understanding. Interest in, and enjoyment of, the implementation of the fundamentals of materials science in process engineering practice.

More information

This course is structured consecutively: after the Bachelor’s degree, a further Master’s programme is available.
