Absolute probe

Differential probe

The Point Spread Function (PSF) brings up the sensitivity distribution of the probe. It is recorded on test defects much smaller than the area of interaction of the probe (e.g. micro drilling).

Standard probes are less suited for imaging due to their bipolar and ambiguous PSF.

Standard probes

The pitch-catch probe provides good penetration and a PSF close to that of optical systems. The shape of the PSF reminds of a Mexican hat. This shape does not get lost with increasing spacing between the transmitter and receiver coil.
