Pore network model for drying of salt solutions

The focus of this research project is on fundamental understanding of salt and moisture transport mechanisms during convective drying of porous materials. To this purpose, we develop a discrete pore-network model that combines the algorithms of solution migration and drying to track the distribution of crystallization sites within a porous matrix. With this model the roles of salt transport by advection (capillary flow) versus diffusion (concentration gradient), the effect of solution properties (such as initial salt distribution and viscosity), drying conditions, and also the porous support structure shall be investigated. The knowledge gained from this study will then be applied into the industrial practices.
