Research intention of NaWiTec

The project scheme

The project deals with the development of methods and experimental studies on the design of structured particles in fluidized bed processes. Fluidized bed processes are applied in the pharmaceutical industry, the food and the fertilizer industry. The aim is to produce a dust-free, free-flowing granulate or agglomerate from liquid raw materials. During the process, certain properties are imposed on the particles, which are required for the usage of the product, e.g. the particle size or the particle moisture which affect important characteristics such as dissolution behavior, transportability and storage stability. During particle formation, a certain structure is generated, e.g. layer porosity of a single particle as well as the structure formed by several particles in the case of agglomeration. Since the particle structures have significant influence on the product characteristics, the knowledge of the structure-forming processes is of great interest. Thus the research focuses are
  • the investigation and description of structure-forming processes,
  • testing and further development of (in situ) measurement methods for the detection of the structure formation,
  • as well as the design of control concepts to obtain desired structures in the products.
To achieve these goals some major problems in
  • description of the dynamics of particle formation processes
  • in-line measurements of particle properties such as particle size and moisture content
  • experimental investigations of fluidized bed processes (particle formulation and drying) and
  • development of control concepts and strategies
have to be solved. Therefore NaWiTec is well equipped with experimental facilities. That comprehends several laboratory fluidized beds equipped with ultra-modern measurement techniques for the characterization of particle properties.

Important methods which are applied in the NaWiTec are
  • macroscopic and discrete population balance models
  • CFD and DEM simulations
  • nonlinear, robust and predictive control methods
The following experimental equipment  is available:
  • Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV)
  • X-ray tomography
  • Scanning electron microscope
  • Fibre optical measurement devices for particle size, concentration and velocity determination
  • Nuclear magnetic resonance
  • Confocal scanning microscopy

Our partners

The NaWiTec group cooperates closely with local industrial partners. These partners are, e.g.:
  • IPT - Pergande GmbH, Weißandt Gölzau
  • Glatt Ingenieurtechnik GmbH, Weimar
  • AVA GmbH, Magdeburg
Moreover, further national and international partners are in close cooperation with NaWiTec.

The NaWiTec group is funded within the research program “Unternehmen Region InnoProfile-Transfer” by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research from 2013 to 2018.
