Renewable Energies
The chair of thermal process engineering is established and successfull in the research of heat and mass transfer in particle systems and porous media. Because of the existing problems in todays power generation e.g. climate change, scarcity of  resscources and final diposal of nuclear waste, the competitives of the chair should be used to develop more efficient technologies for sustainable energy supply.
To realize this idea we are focussing on biomass gasification and combustion. Here our aim is to get to know these conversion processes in more detail in order to control for higher efficiency and lower pollutant emission.

Experience shows that the fluidized bed technology is the most efficient way for thermo-chemical conversion of  particulate fuels. In cooperation with the Fraunhofer Institute for .... that already dealed with different applications in this field, we derive theoretical models and simulate the different processes. Later it is possible to compare simulation results with the data we get from experiments in a fluidized bed reactor for biomass conversion, which will be controlled on the basis of the dynamic models. Another part of our engagement in this field is the contribution in the multi-disciplinary project VIERforES which has been initiated to build a virtual reality for visualizing complex systems, for example different energy plants. So it will be possible to monitore all these parallel processes, make predictions and control each of them in correspondence to the demand of the electrical network. For a decentralized system of  power plants it is important to be able to react soon to increase the safety of each plant and by this to guarantee a stable network supplying the people.

Another important aspect of  a new energy system application is the storage of thermal energy. For the long-term success of renewable energies -- especially in the sector of solar power plants or for the improvement of energy efficiency --, heat storage is a very relevant issue.
For this reason the chair of thermal process engineering strives its efforts toward research on heat storage. An important aim is the design of a dipersive material that can be used as heat storing media. Using fluidized bed technology heat can then be transferred from for example hot gas, industrial waste heat or high temperature solar plants to the heat storing particles.

Regarding the future demands on the energy sector and the necessity of its restructure it is important to initiate endeavours in the field of energy process engineering in addition to conventional research on product oriented process design.
