CFD-DEM simulation of particle dynamics in the fluidized beds
An open source system (OpenFOAM and LIGGGHTS) is applied for CFD-DEM simulation in different configurations, including top-spray bed, spouted bed and Wurster-coater bed. The Soft-sphere model is used in DEM solver to evaluate particle-particle contact forces, where the spring model accounts for elastic deformations of particle while the dash-pot model accounts for the viscous energy dissipation. The parallel coupling between CFD solver and DEM solver is achieved by message passing the interface (MPI).

The simulation results of particle-particle collision frequency, cycle time distributions, and residence time distributions in different process zones are important initial conditions of the corresponding population balance model (PBM) simulation.
Color Particle tracing velocimetry (PTV) measurements of polydisperse systems
In a lab-scale pseudo-2D gas-solid fluidized bed, new developed PTV coupled with a color particle classification algorithm are adapted to measure the particles dynamics of polydisperse system.
