Formation of particulate products
The quality of products of in industrial processes is often determined by the properties and their distribution among the single particles. A wide moisture content distribution after drying as well as a wide distribution of particle size after granulation is the aim and leads generally to good characteristics of the product. For e.g. the mentioned processes the fluidized bed technology is state of the art, since the particles get fluidized with air or another gas forcing an intense heat and mass transfer. Especially continuous horizontal fluidized beds do have on one hand some advantages, since these processes reduce the dead time and man power but on the other hand feature a more or less wide distribution of particle residence time affecting the properties due to dispersion.

The objective is to generate data from measurements regarding the residence time behavior of particular solids in horizontal fluidized beds and to set a correlation for the determined dispersion coefficient. Furthermore data about the distribution of moisture content and of the thickness of the coated particle shells has to be collected. With this data the validation of a model predicting these distributions has to be done.

All information generated during the runtime of the project is provided to the fluidized bed users as well as the producers of horizontal fluidized beds to increase their product quality and profitability.
